This week’s developments again remind us that the Middle East remains a dangerous and rapidly changing theater. The headlines can move quickly, but believers must watch with discernment, pray faithfully, and remember the promises of God concerning Israel, Jerusalem, and the nations.
The USS George Washington has relieved the USS Abraham Lincoln, which is now returning to San Diego. This is more than the movement of a single ship. An aircraft carrier battle group includes the carrier, guided-missile cruisers, destroyers, and other support vessels—often including a nuclear submarine. These are major assets, and their placement reflects the strategic concerns of the United States.
The George Washington is normally assigned in the Pacific, particularly with the growing concern over China. Its movement toward the Persian Gulf shows the continuing seriousness of the conflict with Iran. At the same time, the United States is considering changes to its land-based force posture throughout the region. With thousands of personnel stationed at bases in range of Iranian missiles, the Department of War is weighing whether forces should be repositioned rather than remaining exposed in areas that have already endured attacks and casualties.
We should pray for all of our service members, including the sailors returning home and those who remain stationed in dangerous places. They serve at the direction of our government, often in circumstances far beyond their control. May the Lord protect them and give wisdom to those making decisions about the security of our nation.
Israel is also preparing to hold tribunal trials for approximately 300 terrorists already in custody from the October 7th massacre. Israel has stated that due process will be provided. At the same time, Israeli officials have made clear that they intend to pursue justice for those who committed these atrocities. Israel continues to locate and eliminate terrorists connected to that attack, including a recent operation against Hamas figures meeting in Gaza.
There is a moral distinction that must not be blurred: terrorism is not legitimate resistance, and the deliberate murder of innocent people is not a political disagreement. The world may pressure Israel to forget, compromise, or negotiate away its security, but October 7th exposed the murderous intent of Hamas. Israel has every right and responsibility to defend her people and to hold perpetrators accountable under law.
President Trump has announced an intensified economic strategy toward Iran, describing it as an “economic D-Day.” The approach appears designed to increase sanctions on Iran and on nations that would continue trading with the Iranian regime. While military pressure and the naval blockade remain significant, the objective is to deny the regime the resources it uses to sustain terrorism, regional instability, and its continuing threat against Israel.
Iran’s leaders have repeatedly shown that they do not think like ordinary political leaders. Their ideology, their hatred of Israel, and their pursuit of regional power make them a continuing threat. Economic pressure may prove effective, but we should not be naïve about the regime’s intentions. We must pray that the Lord restrains evil and that the nations do not enable those who seek chaos and destruction.
In Judea and Samaria, Israel has announced plans for 1,200 new homes in the E1 area. The European Union, still committed to the failed two-state formula, has reacted with threats of sanctions and economic pressure. Yet Israel cannot build its future upon the approval of those who do not bear the consequences of Israel’s security decisions.
The so-called two-state solution has repeatedly failed because it ignores the central issue: Israel’s enemies have not accepted the Jewish state’s right to exist. One cannot make a durable peace with those whose stated objective is your destruction. The land of Israel is not merely a diplomatic bargaining chip. It is the land of promise, the setting of God’s covenants, and the place where the Lord will accomplish His purposes in the last days.
Reports this week also highlighted disagreement between Jared Kushner’s discussions with Hamas and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s position. Netanyahu reportedly made Israel’s stance clear: Hamas must be disarmed, Israel will not withdraw from the necessary buffer zones, and Israel will continue pursuing those responsible for October 7th. Israel is not bound by agreements made without its participation, and it should not be expected to place its security in the hands of outside negotiators.
The northern front remains volatile as well. Hezbollah continues its hostile activity, and Israel has acted against threats connected to Syria. Turkey’s increasing involvement is particularly concerning. Turkey has long demonstrated hostility toward Israel and support for Hamas, and its ambitions in Syria could further destabilize the region. We must watch these developments carefully, because alliances and power centers in the Middle East are shifting before our eyes.
I also had the opportunity to speak with Ehud Dribben, an Israeli special forces veteran and co-founder of Modern 48. Their work training civilian communities in Israel to defend themselves is vital. One community that had received this kind of training before October 7th successfully defended its people against the terrorists. This is not merely about putting a rifle in someone’s hands; it is about organization, preparedness, and the sober responsibility of protecting one’s community.
In Judea and Samaria, daily tensions continue between Palestinians and Israeli communities. There are real security threats, including attacks against Israeli civilians and soldiers. At the same time, we must remember that the commandments of God apply to everyone. Defending oneself is right; taking what does not belong to you is not. We should seek truth, reject false accusations against Israel, and also uphold the righteous standard of God’s Word.
Please continue to pray for the peace of Jerusalem. Pray for Israel, for the IDF, for the border communities, for the families affected by terrorism, and for American forces serving in the region. Pray that our leaders will have wisdom and courage, and that the people of God will stand with the truth of Scripture in these critical days.
