Current Events in Israel and the Middle East: A Messianic Perspective

Shalom, everyone. I'm Monte Judah with Lion and Lamb Ministries; welcome to another edition of Messianic World Update. Today’s date is Friday, May 17th of the year 2024. Let’s delve into some of the most recent events occurring in Israel and the Middle East. As we all know, these are turbulent times, and understanding the complexities of the situation is paramount.

Recently, we've seen an uptick in Hezbollah's attacks on the northern border, leading to unfortunate injuries among the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF); 2 soldiers were killed and more were injured. These attacks, which include drone launches and anti-tank rockets, have spurred Israel to respond with airstrikes, leading to the elimination of some Hezbollah leaders. Despite these efforts, the border remains a hostile zone.

Simultaneously, we're witnessing the resurgence of Hamas elements in northern Gaza. These elements are not only attacking IDF units but are also launching more missiles into Israel. In a “friendly fire” incident, the IDF tank forces mistakenly fired on a company of their own soldiers, killing five and injuring seven others. The situation is further complicated by the internal disagreements within Israel's war cabinet, featuring Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, and War Cabinet member Benny Gantz.

The hostage situation is another factor adding to the tension. The stalled negotiations for the return of hostages have led to constant protests in the streets of Tel Aviv and Jerusalem. We must remember that there are several American citizens being held hostage in Gaza, along with the Israeli hostages. The Israeli government is doing its best to address these concerns, but the hostage families are understandably frustrated.

Moreover, the refusal of some of the Haredi students to join the IDF, despite the desperate need for their service, has further complicated matters. The government of Prime Minister Netanyahu is trying to pass an exemption bill, but this move is facing resistance from various quarters, including the Attorney General and the Supreme Court.

Amidst all these, the international challenges are also mounting. The International Criminal Court is hearing charges against Israel, primarily from South Africa, for the alleged genocide of the Palestinian people. While these charges carry no weight for enforcement, they do add to the public relations battle Israel is facing.

Despite all these challenges, Israel recently celebrated its 76th anniversary. The subdued celebration was a testament to the resilience of the nation. It's a reminder of the promise in Zechariah, Chapter 12, of God's protection for Jerusalem and Judah amidst the surrounding hostility.

As we navigate these trying times, let's remember to pray for the safety and freedom of the remaining hostages, for the stability of Israel, and for our fellow believers around the world. Remember to pray also for The Israel Summit next week in Franklin, Tennessee. In the midst of all this tumult, one thing is certain: things are about to get biblical.

Shabbat Shalom to all of you.
